The Arizona Trail stretches about 800 miles across the state of Arizona. I’m hiking it from the state’s southern border with Mexico to the northern border with Utah. In between, the trail crosses over mountain ranges like the Superstitions, Catalinas and San Francisco Peaks, and through canyons like Sabino, Alamo and The Grand Canyon. To minimize time away from my family (and keep some sanity), I’m breaking the 800 mile journey up into 4-5 sections. I hiked the first section, 160 miles from Montezuma Pass near the Mexican border to the Catalina Foothills north of Tucson, between March 2 and March 17. My brother Chris joined me for the hardest part, about 60 miles over the Huachuca Mountains and through Canelo Hills until the town of Patagonia, Arizona. These posts, reassembled from notes and photos on the trail, refer to that trip. I start the next section, roughly 500 miles of trail from Tucson to Flagstaff, on April 7, 2016. I’ll start posting about that segment a few days into the trip. Hope you like it.
